The Australian Labradoodle was originally created as a guide dog for allergy sufferers – check out the history of the breed!

The story of the Australian Labradoodle originated in Australia in the late 1980s. The local guide dog association was asked about a breed that would not only be suitable as a guide dog in nature but also allergy friendly. Because the Labrador Retriever has a long history as a guide dog, a new dog breed began to be developed by crossing the Labrador Retriever with a big poodle. The poodle was chosen for the purpose because of the fur to be trimmed, as it produces less allergenic dandruff than usual.

The history of the breed began in Australia

Already at the first crossbreed, it was found that some of the puppies did not cause symptoms in asthmatics and allergy sufferers. After a successful start, Tegan Parks and Rutland Manors took more breeds into the breed. The choices were made carefully to confirm the good qualities of the first litter. These included the dog’s good health and physique, pleasant temperament and allergy friendliness. In addition to the Labrador Retriever and Poodle, the Irish Water Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel and English Cocker Spaniel were included in the breed.

The new breed was named the Australian Service Dog (ASD Australian Labradoodle). The amalgamation of many races sought to refine the problem areas typical of some races. At the same time, the aim was to expand the breed’s gene bank and prevent excessive inbreeding. The breed was introduced in the United States in the 1990s and immediately became very popular in the United States and Australia, among others.
